The artists

Pilar Valero

She began her musical studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Murcia with Miguel Luis Losada, completing them with an Extraordinary Prize. She then moved to Granada to continue her university studies (under the direction of Juan José Pérez Torrecillas, a direct pupil of the great pianist and teacher Eduardo del Pueyo), where she won Third Prize in the “Juventudes Musicales” Competition. In 1991, she received a scholarship from the Belgian government to continue her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Belgium) under the direction of Patricia Montero, where she was awarded First Prize with honours. He then continued his higher studies in Brussels with maestro Aquiles delle Vigne, a direct disciple of Claudio Arrau and Del Pueyo. Since then, he has performed extensively in concerts in Italy, Belgium, France, Tunisia, Luxembourg, Germany, Russia and Ljubljana (where he made a recording for Slovenian television), receiving great critical acclaim. As a soloist, his performances of Mozart’s Concertos KV 466 and KV 212, Beethoven’s Concertos Nos. 3 and 4, and F. Poulenc’s Concerto with the Youth Orchestra, the Murcia Regional Orchestra, and the Murcia Symphony Orchestra, respectively, are particularly noteworthy. Bach concertos with the Czech orchestra “Brno Soloists”. With the 21st Century Orchestra, conducted by Jordi Mora, Schumann’s Concerto in A minor. With the Elche Symphony Orchestra, he performed Mozart’s Concertos KV 212 and Brahms’ Op. 15 No. 1. He also performed Rachmaninoff’s Concerto Op. 18 in Ekaterinburg (Russia) with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra and with the “Ploiesti Orchestra” of Romania. She has taken advanced courses with Pierre Hantaï (harpsichord), C. Guinovart, Jan D’Haene (analysis and harmony), Blanca Uribe, P. Badura-Skoda, Emile Naumoff, Aquiles del Vigne, Pavel Egorov, Maria Joao Pires, etc. She has taught courses in Montserrat, Miranda de Ebro, Almería, Granada, Jaén, etc., and has been invited on numerous occasions to give lectures on topics related to music and female composers, on which she has published numerous works. Among his publications are a work on music in cafés and silent films in Murcia (La música en los cafés-conciertos y en los cines murcianos a principio del s. XX, Trabajo DEA, Universidad de la Rioja, 2009), and on music in workers’ associations “Music in cafés and workers” associations: an approach to a sound map of Murcia in the first third of the 20th century’ in Discorsi e pratiche musicali nazionaliste (1900-1970), Logroño, Pilar Ramos López (ed.), Logroño, University of La Rioja, 2012), as well as an article on the piano works of Murcian composer Julián Santos (Julian Santos: One Hundred Years of Music 1900-2008. Murcia, Ed. Compañía Lírica J. Santos, 2008) and numerous articles on contemporary piano in the magazine Música d’Ara. She has recorded a CD with the contemporary music group Concertus Novo featuring works by composer Manuel Seco. She has also recorded a CD with works by L. de Grignon with the Catalan group Barcino. She has been invited to participate as a judge in the competitions ‘San Bartolomeo di Mare’ in Italy and “Petrof”, ‘El Ejido’, Diputación de Albacete and Clamo Music in Spain. She studied composition under Javier Darias at the E.C.C.A. in Alcoy (as part of the “Contemporary Music in Europe” project, with recitals in various countries). She toured Spain with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Concerto Op. 18, conducted by Lin Tao and Dimitri Liss, to great critical acclaim. She has performed Shostakovich’s Quintet with the prestigious Kopelman Quartet and other quintets with members of the Moscow Virtuosi, as well as numerous concerts, including Prokofiev’s Third Concerto in C major with the Murcia Symphony Orchestra. She has published two books with the publishing house La Fea Burguesía, as well as numerous essays on music in the magazine ACC. She is currently a competitive piano teacher at the Murcia Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Humanities at the University of La Rioja. Under the supervision of Pilar Ramos, she completed her doctoral thesis on “Cultural associations in Murcia in the first quarter of the 20th century”.

Ramon Gomez

He began his musical studies at the age of 10, specialising in guitar, and at 17 in cello, at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Murcia, where he obtained a master’s degree in both instruments. He studied chamber music and cello at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Córdoba with Professor Álvaro Campos and also at the Escuela Internacional de Música de Barcelona with Maestro Marçal Cervera. He studied composition at the Escuela de Composición y Creación de Alcoy with composer Javier Darias. He has participated in masterclasses with professors such as Javier Vidaechea (a student of G. Casadó), Reimund Korupp (professor at the University of Music in Heidelberg-Mannheim), Christoph Henkel (professor at the Conservatory of Freiburg) and Ferenc Rados (professor at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest), among others. For years she studied chamber music with professor and conductor Jordi Mora, a student of the famous conductor Sergiu Celibidache. She has given cello recitals throughout most of Spain and in various cities in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. She has performed as a soloist with the Elche Symphony Orchestra and the Cartagena Chamber Orchestra. He is a professor of cello at the Murcia Professional Conservatory of Music and was one of the founding members of the Murcia Symphony Orchestra and the Cartagena Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Rubaiyat string quartet.
