Butoh dance and videodance workshop
with Luan Machado
On November 8, from 2 PM to 6 PM, the Luciana Matalon Foundation will host a workshop dedicated to Butoh dance and videodance. The workshop is open to everyone aged 16 and up and does not require prior dance experience.
Butoh originated in Japan as a radical form of expression and resistance in the aftermath of the atomic bombings. It invites a dance that emerges from within — from deep bodily states that are often unsettling, poetic, and liberating.
In this workshop, the body will be explored as a primary expressive tool — a site of transformation, memory, and ritual. The proposed practices will weave together physical performance and audiovisual experimentation, incorporating sound devices and objects to create short individual and collective performance studies.
The work will be both physical and sensorial, exploring states of presence and metamorphosis in relation to space and others. Through exercises, improvisation, video recording, and ritual practices, each participant will be guided in discovering a personal, uncodified language — where dance becomes a necessary gesture, bearing witness to what still inhabits and moves the body.
The workshop aims to provide both theoretical and practical tools to understand the basics and techniques of Butoh dance, enabling participants to express themselves through this creative language.
Butoh dance frees what is still imprisoned.
Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. The event will take place barefoot.
