The Program
From Mozart’s so-called Palatine Sonatas to Beethoven’s Sonatas Opus 30, about 25 years passed, but in between, the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte’s coup d’état took place; the overall atmosphere of the two pieces could not be more different, indeed! The lively grace and spirit of Mozart’s sonata give way to the dark and tormented tone of Beethoven’s sonata (C minor – traditionally sad and somber!), which does not yet fully belong to his mature style—the one of the Fifth Symphony (also in C minor), so to speak—but it anticipates it in certain aspects. However, humor is never lacking, especially in Beethoven’s chamber music, as is evident in the third movement, which opens with an enigmatic and extremely modern and surprising theme.
